This is your time to do something about it.

We need volunteers with law enforcement background and/or volunteers for mentoring or tutoring at Eastern High School.

Eastern High School Families....our kids need our help. Specifically, our schools need your help. Step one is to assemble volunteers for Eastern High School who are willing to channel their frustrations into positive actions.

The recent gun incident at Eastern has enraged me. To that end, I told the principal I would be relentless in finding the resources, the volunteers, or generating the political will to create safer environments in our schools. This would include installing and staffing metal detectors. If we can have them at the Court House and the State House, we can have them at our School House. I'm scheduled to speak at the next JCPS board meeting, and I've only just started my campaign to bend ears so that we can actually start making serious changes for our school safety. I'm not interested in what can't be done. I'm only interested in what can be done.

Today, I received a request back from our school to help locate volunteers with law enforcement backgrounds, and volunteers to be mentors and tutors at Eastern High School. I'm confident that enough parents, grandparents, neighbors, friends, pastors, and business owners are as concerned about our children as I am. This is a small ask, but it's critical we stand together and show our politicians and administrators that we are serious about providing a better life for our children and that we're done accepting inaction and half-measures when it comes to fighting for our kids' safety.

There may be parent organizations already up and running that are doing this...I don’t know. If so, please let me know how to connect with them. If there are not…there is one now. I know many of you have been in the fight for a long time and are saying, “Welcome to the party.” For your efforts, I thank you…I’m on your side. Let’s work together.

If you’re willing to volunteer your time…please fill out the form. Additionally, please share this link with your networks. We will get this solved. I will work with Dr. Orman to provide additional details as she provides them and I will be in touch. I thank you!

Hectic week. We're picking up volunteers but we still need to get the word out. Seems this little website and a tweet got some people's attention and raised a few concerns. So, let me address those here.

  1. We're not raising a militia or a security force.
  2. We're asking for volunteers.
  3. I was asked to do my best to find volunteer mentors, tutors, and people with law enforcement backgrounds. I didn't just concoct these things out of thin air.
  4. Everybody who serves in the school must be approved by the administration. I appreciate that Dr. Orman needed to send out an email to clarify that.

I spoke to James Craig about the actions and positions of the JCPS board. He was kind and generous with his time and did his best to explain the complexities of the situation. I'd encourage you to reach out to him directly if you'd like to get his perspective. Just note, his family was personally affected as well, so please be kind. He is and will be an advocate for your kids.

I learned the district is evaluating weapon detection systems (read the report).Nothing has been decided on this front yet. As much I believe they should be a part of the solution, I understand they cannot be the entire solution. This needs to be a multi-pronged approach. My opinion, we can't let our desire for a "perfect" solution be a holdup to implementing "better than now" solutions in the short-term.

Additionally, a saftey plan was passed unanimously at the last board meeting. (read the plan)

I am scheduled to speak at the 2-7 board meeting. I intend to offer my support to be a part of the solution. I know they are working on it. I'm here to remove any obstacles that I can. You too can let your voice be heard. Click here to get on the agenda.

Also, we made the news. Thanks WAVE 3 for the coverage.

Keep liking and sharing, and I'll coordinate with the school when we get our volunteer list built up.

Thanks again!
